Nikolaus Harnoncourt Receives RPS Gold Medal

Harnoncourt receives his award from the RPS Chairman
Nikolaus Harnoncourt has become the latest recipient of the prestigious RPS Gold Medal. The presentation took place on-stage at the Barbican on Sunday 22 April, after the maestro had conducted a performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam.

The concert programme was particularly apt; the RPS Gold Medal was created to commemorate the centenary of Beethoven’s birth and celebrates the close relationship between the Society and the composer. Harnoncourt's performances and recordings of Beethoven’s work have achieved a legendary status. Sunday's concert and presentation, which was met with a standing ovation, reminded us why.
